This past week, like many of you, my soul was disturbed from the news of Charlottesville. Throughout the mix of emotions, I could sense the undertone of despair and disconnect permeating within our society. For me, a whisper from God was:
“ Scott, have you not seen and heard ENOUGH ALREADY?”
As I’ve thought about this moment, I realize that I have indeed seen and heard ENOUGH ALREADY. Specifically, our society’s willingness to “conference” around political and social issues, which are all too often fraught with unhealthy, unproductive an undermining tones and negative accusations.
For me, the question is not whether I’m a liberal or conservative, but am I a reflection of Jesus Christ who redeemed me? If so, how am I seeking ways to show GRACE in the midst of anger? In order for me to be my best reflection of the Living God, I must also be deliberate and intentional in spending FACE-TIME time with God. In the midst of struggles within our world, I’m encouraged that God still wants FACE-TIME with me.
I’m very fortunate to be able to work with wonderful churches and clergy doing incredible ministry works. Some of the ways we communicate is through social media, which helps broaden the connection of our churches and pastors in insightful and meaningful ways. Yet, because of our human brokenness, the misuse of these tools without restraint can cause deceit, moral corruption, and division, even hatred toward fellow believers. It is my hope that each of us will spend more time in authentic relationships getting to know each other face-to-face, rather than only through emojis.
As a better way to develop my face-to-face, starting in September, I’m renewing my FACE-TIME with God on a weekly basis by attending the Upper Room worship services. The services start at 10:45 AM and conclude at 11:30 AM each Wednesday of the week. My hope is that by making dedicated worship FACE-TIME with God, I can begin to regain clarity on how to live out ENOUGH ALREADY, which I believe is the redemptive work of God. After the service, I would love to break bread with you for lunch.
It is my privilege to serve as your District Superintendent.
Scott
