This Sunday we continue our “Journey through the Scriptures” as we look at the Gospel of Mark. In this Gospel, Jesus proclaims the Kingdom and demands repentance. The pace is rapid and the word “immediately” appears twenty-seven times. The opening verse sets the stage: “The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God (Mark 1:1). Mark will write about the good news of Jesus the promised Messiah, strong Son of God, sent to save.
As I’ve become preparing for the message, my mind keeps coming to Lance Armstrong. Lance has been all over the news lately. In his upcoming appearance/interview on the “Oprah show” he finally admits to using steroids during his racing career, something he has denied for more than a decade. It has been a sad thing to watch as this once highly respected athlete, who overcame cancer to win the Tour de France (most prestigious cycling event) seven times, caught in his own fabrications and lies. Moreover, he is paying a high price for his missteps. His racing titles and his Olympic medal is being stripped from him. In addition, he will not be able to race competitively again. The truth is Lance started to believe his own lies. Still there were many who put a great deal of trust in Lance and many that saw him as a sign of hope for their cancer battles. And, he did provide inspiration for many people, both emotionally and financially.
Whereas, I do believe that Lance should suffer the consequences of his actions (and he is) for lying and taking steroids, I do believe in FORGIVENESS and GRACE. What I know about myself, as much as I don’t like to admit it, I can get caught up in the “world” instead of staying completely focused on God. Mark 1:14-15 says, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near, repent and believe in the good news”(NIV). The good news is about forgiveness and grace. I truly believe that Lance Armstrong can receive true forgiveness if he comes to the one (Jesus) who offers it on his behalf and repents. Most especially, I believe this same GRACE is offered to you and me. If you know someone who may need to know Jesus as Lord, please invite him or her to church.
It is my privilege to be your Pastor.
